{"id":38503,"date":"2021-03-10T18:17:20","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T18:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jww.org\/?p=38503"},"modified":"2021-03-10T18:17:20","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T18:17:20","slug":"jww-uyghur-human-rights-protection-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/jww-uyghur-human-rights-protection-act\/","title":{"rendered":"JWW applauds bill that would support Uyghurs seeking asylum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jewish World Watch (JWW) applauds this week&#8217;s introduction of the Uyghur Human Rights Protection Act (H.R. 1630) in the House of Representatives to support Uyghurs seeking asylum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe Jewish community understands viscerally the importance of providing refugee status to the Uyghurs fleeing an ongoing genocide,\u201d said JWW Executive Director Serena Oberstein. \u201cThis bill would alleviate the constant fear of extradition for those who have escaped China\u2019s deliberate and systematic persecution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The bipartisan legislation, introduced by Rep. Ted Deutch (D), Rep. Diaz-Balart (R), Rep. Chris Smith (R), and Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D), would allow applicants to forgo a United Nations referral and apply directly as refugees to the U.S. government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many <a href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/conflict-areas\/uyghurs\/\">Uyghur<\/a> refugees are currently seeking safety in countries with strong economic and diplomatic ties to China, leaving them at extreme risk of expulsion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">China has interned more than two million Uyghur people \u2013 many of whom have been relocated and forced into slave labor. The U.S. has\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/conflict-areas\/china\/state-department-china-genocide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">declared the violations against the Uyghurs a genocide<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Now Congress must act to safeguard Uyghurs who have escaped and ensure that their human rights are protected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We are asking our supporters to contact their Representatives using our simple advocacy tool to urge them to be an early co-signer of this much-needed bill.
