We cannot stand idly by, even in days like these.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the displaced communities we serve face risks every day and are in a uniquely precarious situation with the worldwide spread of COVID-19. We have reached out to our partners on-the-ground to let you know how they are faring.<\/p>\n<h1><b>Here is what we know about the communities we serve:<\/b><\/h1>\n<h2><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23957\" src=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Peace-School-Vocational-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Peace-School-Vocational-5.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Peace-School-Vocational-5-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to our longtime partner in the DRC, there are 3 cases in the western part of the country.&nbsp; When Congo announced its first case, all the details from the health ministry<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-congo\/congo-health-authorities-stumble-with-first-coronavirus-case-confusion-idUSKBN2110K0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were wrong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, raising concerns about the country\u2019s ability to deal with a major health crisis on the heels of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/conflict-areas\/drc\/ebola-epidemic-drc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebola epidemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp; The DRC is already grappling with insufficient health institutions, armed conflict, a profound deficit of trust in public institutions, and a deeply compromised rule of law.&nbsp; Although President Felix Tshisekedi just convened an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/news\/africa\/DRC-felix-tshisekedi-special-cabinet-meeting-coronavirus\/4552902-5494250-lv2td3\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cextraordinary\u201d meeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of his cabinet to discuss its response to coronavirus, our partners on the ground remain skeptical and concerned about the government\u2019s ability to handle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/03\/1058551\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another health crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp; \u201cThe coronavirus situation is very frustrating,\u201d shares one Congolese partner.&nbsp; \u201cWe are very worried! To be honest, I don\u2019t think the country is prepared to deal with this right after Ebola!\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Syria<\/b><\/span><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23952\" src=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/syria-medical.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/syria-medical.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/syria-medical-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in its<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/6c4411b17c8cff0c6052e029a9437b7a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tenth year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of war, Syria has seen an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/spotlight-article\/the-syrian-war-a-never-ending-nightmare-for-civilians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">escalation in fighting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the last rebel stronghold of Idlib since last December, which has freshly displaced close to 1 million people.&nbsp; Civilian infrastructure, including most hospitals, has been decimated as a tactic of war. Currently, the Syrian government maintains that no coronavirus cases have been logged, yet fears are mounting that an outbreak in this war-beleaguered country would be<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/03\/concern-mounts-catastrophic-coronavirus-outbreak-syria-200316003354976.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">catastrophic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This would be especially true for Syrians who have fled to overcrowded camps inside Syria\u2019s borders.&nbsp; Our partner in Syria, which aids us in bringing supplies directly into the hands of doctors who remain working in war-torn Idlib, assures us that containers full of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/projects\/medical-supply-shipment-syria\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical supplies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are continuing to be sent to those doctors.&nbsp; The need for these supplies will be more pressing than ever should an outbreak occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23953\" src=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/rohingya-covid-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/rohingya-covid-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/rohingya-covid-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/rohingya-covid.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Rohingya in Bangladesh<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the World Health Organization and JWW\u2019s partners in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox\u2019s Bazar, Bangladesh report there have been<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1642316\/world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cases yet among the 1 million refugees there,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/asia-pacific\/coronavirus-fear-grips-rohingya-camps-in-bangladesh\/1764588\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fear of an outbreak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is very real.&nbsp; Preparedness efforts are underway, securing clean drinking water, basic hygiene and sanitation. There is also the daunting task of distributing masks and soap to so many vulnerable people.&nbsp; One of our partners on the ground is using the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/projects\/rohingya-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">audio-visual learning program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> JWW funded as a tool to teach the 7,500 Rohingya children in its schools how to protect themselves and their families from infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23956\" src=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/New-2019-2020-lead-gardeners-and-their-first-experience-with-permagardening.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/New-2019-2020-lead-gardeners-and-their-first-experience-with-permagardening.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/New-2019-2020-lead-gardeners-and-their-first-experience-with-permagardening-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Darfuris in Chad<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the Darfuri camps in Chad have no reported cases of coronavirus.&nbsp; \u201cOperations are going on as normal right now,\u201d reports our partner, even as an additional camp has been set up to deal with a<\/span>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/chad\/chad-emergency-update-external-6-march-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new influx<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 16,000 refugees, many of them women and children, as a result of recent clashes in Sudan\u2019s West Darfur State.&nbsp; For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/news\/africa\/Coronavirus-Sudan-declares-emergency\/1066-5493494-civhwu\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a whole, dealing with an outbreak would be a test of its fledgling transitional government, which is already facing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/conflict-areas\/sudan\/sudan-pm-assassination-peace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slew of challenges<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23954\" src=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/unnamed-2-1170x780-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/unnamed-2-1170x780-1-1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jww.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/unnamed-2-1170x780-1-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Uyghurs in China<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comes as no surprise that Beijing has been implementing even more draconian approaches to the containment of the Muslim Uyghur population in East Turkestan (also known as Xinjiang) than in the rest of the country.&nbsp; The 2 million or more Uyghurs currently in China\u2019s \u201cre-education camps\u201d \u2014 who have been subjected to torture, \u201cre-education\u201d and deprived of their fundamental rights, contact with their families, or any legal recourse \u2014 are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/02\/exiled-uighurs-fear-spread-coronavirus-china-camps-200213081556968.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially susceptible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to contagious disease due to the overcrowded cells, lack of medical resources, and generally horrific conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Uyghurs remaining outside the camps, forced to live in a surveillance state, the harsh imposition of quarantine without warning has made it nearly impossible for many to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.uhrp.org\/pdf\/Briefing_Coronavirus-starvation.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">procure food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in widespread starvation and panic.&nbsp; Members of the local Uyghur diaspora in Los Angeles, with whom Jewish World Watch regularly partners, are more fearful than ever for their loved ones.&nbsp; \u201cIt is heartbreaking not knowing how your family is impacted. We are very concerned about how coronavirus is affecting those back home,\u201d one of them told JWW, asking not to be named to protect relatives in China.
