The Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis Social Justice Fellowship, named to honor JWW’s co-founder, the visionary longtime leader of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, is a year-long internship for college and graduate-school students. Rabbi Schulweis envisioned a network of students, multiplying annually, who would help to carry out JWW’s mission — to not stand idly by as genocide and mass atrocities continue throughout the world.
Each year, a roster of JWW Social Justice Fellows are selected for their passion for social justice and for their desire to educate and inspire others to action. This year’s cohort (pictured above) includes two students from USC, two from UCLA, two from Cal State Northridge, one from American Jewish University, and two who are not local to Southern California: one from the University of North Carolina and another from Union College in New York.
The Fellowship provides students with an opportunity to engage in human rights and anti-genocide awareness and advocacy initiatives and to develop a network of anti-genocide activists on campus. Fellows participate in a rigorous orientation and “Brunch and Learn” sessions, receiving more than ten hours of direct instruction on Jewish World Watch’s mission and focus areas.
With the support of JWW staff throughout the school year, Fellows promote JWW’s mission through social media, advocacy actions, and participation in the planning and implementation of on and off-campus educational, advocacy and fundraising events. This year, in addition to promoting, recruiting a school team and participating in JWW’s Walk to End Genocide in Los Angeles on April 30, 2017, Fellows will assist in the planning and execution of the first ever West Coast Lemkin Anti-genocide Summit and film festival.
Applications are now closed for 2016-2017. Applications for the 2017-18 academic year will be available on our website in June, 2017 .
