Over the last few weeks, Jewish leaders from around Los Angeles came together to stand with the Armenian community when fighting broke out in the region of Artsakh or Nagorno-Karabakh. Regional conflict can often get lost in the din of constantly breaking news, but Azeri aggression – supported by Turkish military might – in this region of the Caucasus demanded our attention. Leaders across sectors stepped up and stood in solidarity.
After six weeks of fighting in Artsakh, a deal was struck to bring an end to hostilities that puts in the driver’s seat powerful foes of an Armenian government that have sought throughout history its annihilation. “Armenians,” the New York Times wrote, “are shattered and fearful.”
The Jewish community commemorated Kristallnacht earlier this week, a night in which our houses of worship and businesses were shattered and when 30,000 Jews were rounded up and taken to concentration camps. The world, at the time, responded with silence and inaction. If we have learned anything from our scarred history, it’s the value of global support in the face of injustice.
