A Mother’s Day Story: When a child becomes the inspiration

At just 8 years old, Sidney Ross-Stern was inspired to take action by Jewish World Watch’s Walk to End Genocide. She created her own jewelry business, Jewels4Justice, making beaded necklaces and bracelets and donating 100% of her profits to JWW. She has also accompanied JWW staff to congressional meetings, enthusiastically advocating on behalf of survivors of genocide and mass atrocities. Sidney’s commitment to JWW’s work inspired both her mother and grandmother to get involved, as well.

I have found that being a mother has greatly affected my approach to philanthropy.  When I was young, I never thought that I had any capacity to improve other peoples’ lives.  Once I became a mother, I wanted my daughter, Sidney, to know she had the power to do so.  Once she was in the 2nd grade, we used to have discussions of the news of the day so I could get her to think about issues going on in our society.  I wanted to be sure she realized that we were very fortunate in where and how we live.  It was important to me to try to get my daughter to do something charitable in some way.

When my daughter learned about the Darfuri refugees from Jewish World Watch representatives, I decided we would go to the Walk to End Genocide.  From then on, my daughter has been the one encouraging me to take her to many events to learn about the mass atrocities that are going on currently.

It has been a wonderful bonding opportunity to be able to learn together about working on stopping conflict minerals.  I have been so inspired by my daughter’s efforts in trying to stop genocides and mass atrocities around the globe that I want to do it too.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers of the world.

Having been involved in Jewish World Watch since my granddaughter, Sidney, was 8 years old, along with my daughter, Tammy, I have had the opportunity to appreciate how fortunate I am. This has been a very unique experience for me, since it was my granddaughter who became interested in ending genocides. She was the one who inspired her parents and me to become involved in her pursuit.

We all have learned that by contributing to this and other organizations, we can hopefully improve people’s lives around the world. It will be nice when no more atrocities are perpetrated against women and children. May we all be blessed with health and peace.
